Directive 2009/125/EC, also known as ErP (Energy-related Products), establishes requirements at European level to improve the environmental performance of both products that directly use energy (household appliances, electronic devices, etc.) and products that, although they do not directly use energy, have an impact on energy consumption and can therefore contribute to energy savings for end users.
The main objective of the Directive is to improve the design of all energy-related products by establishing minimum efficiency requirements to reduce environmental impact and limit energy demand.
With the entry into force of EU Regulations 812/2013 Ecolabel and 814/2013 Ecodesign, the scope of the ErP Directive was extended to include plumbing and heating systems, including appliances for heating and domestic hot water production, water heaters and hot water storage tanks.
Since 26 September 2017, compliance with the requirements of the ErP Directive has been mandatory for all energy-related products imported, marketed or sold in all Member States of the European Union.
Consequently, since 26 September 2017, all hot water storage tanks with a capacity of up to 2,000 litres have been redesigned in accordance with ecodesign requirements to reduce heat loss and meet the maximum permitted energy class C, and are classified according to their heat loss into energy efficiency classes ranging from A+ to C.
